Refinish or replace your bathtub? An honest comparison.

Replacing a tub on an island means demolition, shipping and three different trades. Here's how the two options really compare.

Side by side

Two ways to get a tub that looks new.

If your tub is structurally sound, the choice is mostly about cost, disruption and what you'd be giving up.

What replacing a bathtub really involves

A bathtub is installed before the tile and the finished floor, and it's locked in behind both. To get it out, something else has to come apart:

  1. Demolition. The bottom rows of wall tile are removed. A cast iron tub is usually broken up in place with a sledgehammer.
  2. Removal. The pieces go out through the home — in a condo, down the service elevator on the building's schedule.
  3. Plumbing. The drain and overflow are disconnected and refitted to the new tub, which rarely lines up exactly.
  4. The new tub. Bought, shipped to the island, carried in, set and leveled.
  5. Tile and finishing. Backer board, waterproofing, new tile — which seldom matches the old tile, so the whole surround is often redone.

Each step is a separate trade and a separate bill. On Oʻahu, with island shipping and busy contractors, the total is commonly many times the price of the tub itself.

What refinishing involves

We arrive, prepare the surface, repair the damage, pour a new coating, caulk and leave — about three hours. Nothing is disconnected and nothing is demolished. A day later you take a shower.

When refinishing is the right call

  • The tub is steel or cast iron and structurally solid
  • The problem is on the surface: stains, dullness, chips, rust marks, a failed old coating
  • You like the bathroom layout and the tile is in decent shape
  • You're preparing a rental or a sale and need it done this week
  • You live in a condo where demolition means paperwork and neighbor complaints

When replacing makes more sense

  • Rust has gone right through the tub wall
  • You're gutting the bathroom anyway and changing the layout
  • You want a different size or type — a walk-in shower, a soaking tub
  • The tub is acrylic or fiberglass and cracked (we don't refinish those)

We'll tell you honestly which side your tub falls on. If it should be replaced, we'd rather say so from a photo than take your money for a finish that can't last.

What you'd be giving up

Older steel and especially cast iron tubs are heavier and more solid than most of what's sold today. They hold heat, they don't flex, and they've already lasted fifty years. Swapping one for a thin acrylic shell is often a downgrade you pay extra for.

Questions

Refinish-or-replace questions, answered.

Is it cheaper to refinish or replace a bathtub?
Refinishing. A standard tub is a flat $635, while replacement adds demolition, plumbing, tile work and disposal on top of the new tub.
Does a refinished tub look as good as a new one?
A properly poured finish is glossy, bright white and smooth to the touch. Most people can't tell it from a new tub.
How long does a refinished tub last compared with a new one?
With normal care a poured finish can last up to 15 years, and it can be refinished again after that. The tub underneath keeps going indefinitely.
What about a tub liner instead?
A liner is an acrylic shell glued over the old tub. It costs more than refinishing, makes the tub smaller, and water can get trapped between the layers. We don't install them.
